Summary A controlled study showed that speeding birth increased umbilical artery and vein blood pH , most probably by reducing fetal asphyxia. The methods used to speed delivery were simple and were readily applied to a predominantly migrant population. The umbilical artery blood p H in the fast group was significantly higher than in six of seven studies in other centres.
