Summary A case of placenta membranacea is presented in which bleeding between 7 and 20 weeks of gestation was persistent and marked, necessitating blood transfusion to a total of 10 litres. Spontaneous abortion occurred at 20 weeks. Examination of the placenta and membranes showed the presence of a distinct placental disc 2 cm. thick; elsewhere the sac was completely covered by villi 0.2 to 0.3 cm. thick. Comparisons are made with other case reports and the use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of this condition is discussed.
