Summary The concentration of transferrin was measured in the blood of mothers during parturition and in the cord blood of their infants at delivery. The mean serum transferrin level in maternal blood was 361 mg./100 ml. (±71), that in cord blood was 179 mg./l00ml. (±32). There was a highly significant correlation between the level of serum transferrin in mother and infant (r = 0.427, p<0.001). The mean serum transferrin concentration of mothers who produced infants of low birth‐weight was found to be lower than that in other mothers.
