Summary The levels of serum seromucoid were determined in 16 patients who had severe preeclampsia or eclampsia in their last pregnancy, 6 to 24 months previously. In about one‐third of these patients the serum seromucoid levels fell within the normal, non‐pregnant range, while in the remaining two‐thirds, the serum seromucoid level was above normal. The results suggest that pre‐eclampsia or eclampsia could be due to two disease states of different aetiology. Alternatively, the severity of the condition may be related to serum seromucoid level. The immunological implications of the findings are briefly discussed.
