Summary A group of 12 parous women was investigated following severe pre‐eclampsia or eclampsia to see if there was any relationship between serum seromucoid levels, known to be elevated in some of these patients, and cell mediated immune reactions in mixed cultures of their leucocytes and those of their husbands. Statistically significant linear correlations were demonstrated. High levels of maternal serum seromucoid are apparently immunosuppressive in materno‐paternal mixed leucocyte reactions. The possible significance of these findings in relation to the aetiology of pre‐eclampsia or eclampsia is discussed.
