Summary A new technique of catheterisation is described and its results are presented. There was a marked reduction in the incidence of urinary tract infection following catheterisation. The method is cheap, safe and simple and it was easily accepted by the medical and nursing staff. This technique, coupled with the aspiration method of decompression of the bladder at gynaecological laparotomy, could make a significant contribution towards reducing urinary infection.
