Summary The effect of orally administered bromelain (“Ananase”) on the reduction of oedema and bruising in episiotomy wounds of primigravidae was assessed by a double blind controlled clinical trial. The rate of reduction of oedema and bruising was more rapid in the patients on bromelain than in those taking placebo especially when oedema and bruising were severe. The differences noted did not, however, reach statistical significance.
