Summary An unusual case of disseminated intravascular coagulation is reported. It occurred at about the 20th week of pregnancy and was associated with sudden collapse which appeared to be due to amniotic fluid embolism. The resulting coagulation defect was studied from the time of the initial episode over a period of 130 hours. During this time it was possible to avoid blood transfusion and the alterations in coagulation factors and the fibrinolytic system were measured.
