Summary An unusual case of a large marginal circular haematoma of the placenta is described. Over a large area the haematoma disrupted the placenta, separating the chorionic plate with its great vessels and the insertion of the umbilical cord from the rest of the placental chorion. It is thought that the haematoma was produced by a prolonged strong contraction of the upper segment in which the major portion of the placenta was sited.
