Summary The serum concentration of Human Chorionic Somatomammotropin (HCS) during the third trimester of pregnancy has been measured in 230 patients using a solid phase radioimmunoassay technique. The range of levels for normal pregnancy was found to be wide, and no clinical significance could be attributed to a fall in HCS concentration to 50 per cent of its initial value. The measurement of HCS concentration gives some indication of placental function, but hasnot helped in the clinical management of abnormal pregnancies.
