Summary Blood cultures were utilized to assess the mitotic response of newborn cord blood to phytohaemagglutinin stimulation by both micro‐ and macromethods. A significantly higher response was obtained in the newborn cord blood than in venous blood of a proportionate number of mothers. The significance of this enhanced response is discussed.
