Summary An investigation into the irregularity of menstrual cycles within two years of the menarche does not indicate any increasing regularity when compared with reports of 30 years ago. Intervals of 4, 5 and 6 months between periods are not uncommon, especially during the first five cycles. Cycle length gradually declined during the 15 cycles studied but a wide cycle range persisted in cycles 11 to 15.
