Summary A review of 122 cases of vesico‐vaginal and other fistulae treated in Khartoum Teaching Hospital (1966–8) is presented. The vast majority were due to ischaemic necrosis as a result of obstructed labour. The underlying factors, methods of treatment and results are described. Closure of the fistula was successful in 90 patients while urinary diversion was necessary in 2; the other 30 patients are awaiting further attempts at repair. Suggestions for the improvement of results are offered. In the Sudan genito‐urinary fistulae constitute a major problem. Most of them result from prolonged neglected labour and would be prevented by better antenatal and intranatal care. The results of treatment are not entirely satisfactory, but the causes of failure are largely avoidable.
