Summary High concentrations of prostaglandins E 2 and F 2α have been found in human amniotic fluid following spontaneous abortion at 13–23 weeks gestation. Prosta‐glandin‐like activity is also present in maternal venous blood obtained during spontaneous abortion. Detectable amounts of prostaglandins E 2 and F 2α were not found in samples of amniotic fluid obtained from women during abdominal termination of pregnancy on therapeutic grounds. The possible role of prostaglandins in premature labour leading to spontaneous abortion is discussed.
