Summary Six subfertile women were each studied by basal body temperature, bi‐weekly hormone excretion assays, uterine curettage and laparoscopy, and histological and histochemical evaluation of the endometrium, during one normal menstrual cycle. The results showed little correlation between the various accepted criteria of ovulation, and in particular the histological findings and the values of oestriol and pregnanediol excretion were in direct conflict in all except one patient. The relevance of the finding of secretory activity in the endometrium is discussed and suggestions are made for the investigation of subfertile women. It is not known if these variable results are found in normally menstruating fertile women, or if the variations are directly responsible for the infertile state.
