Summary Limecycline was given by mouth 6‐hourly and cephaloridine was given intramuscularly 12‐hourly in two doses to 60 women undergoing amniotomy for induction of labour in order to study the absorption and transfer of the antibiotics to the fetus as a protection against intrapartum infections. Both drugs were shown to provide useful inhibitory concentrations in maternal serum, amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood. The advantages and disadvantages of the two drugs, and the appropriate dose schemes for each antibiotic are discussed.
