Summary The incidence of transplacental haemorrhage has been estimated in 200 women undergoing termination of pregnancy. Vaginal termination by curettage or vacuum aspiration carried a 25 per cent risk of transplacental haemorrhage determined by acid elution. Similarly, hysterotomy carried a 23 per cent risk. Hysterectomy or intra‐amniotic injection of glucose were less likely to cause transplacental bleeding. One rhesus negative patient showed a rapid rise in incomplete anti‐D six months after termination by curettage.
