Summary The size of feto‐maternal transfusion which occurs when fetal blood is allowed to run away from the divided umbilical cord as soon as the baby is delivered, is compared with that following the more orthodox management of the third stage. By using this method the average volume of transplacental transfusion and the incidence of detectable bleeds are reduced.
