Twice‐a‐day hot circulation cleaning of milking plants was compared with one hot and one cold circulation clean on each of 32 farms practising twice‐a‐day milking. The bacteriological condition and visual cleanliness of plants were monitored over periods of eight weeks for each treatment. Although the geometric mean colony counts of plant rinses were higher for the once‐a‐day hot treatment, it was concluded that one hot and one cold clean gave satisfactory results provided the basic requirements of circulation cleaning were met.
