A new rapid method for the quantitative estimation of sediment in milk within 20 minutes is described. The sediment was recovered from milk by filtration through 25µm pore size nylon filter cloth. After staining with malachite green the sediment on the filter was quantified by television image analysis. There was a linear relation between added sediment in the range 0 ‐ 5mg/l and the area of sediment measured by image analysis (correlation coefficient, r = 0.98). There was good agreement between the estimates of sediment in farm milks as assessed by the new method and the Minit test (r = 0.94).
