The paper briefly traces the historical development of world energy supplies and speculates on the trends in demand and availability for the next 50 years. It discusses the steps which need to be taken to reduce energy use and emphasizes the importance of ‘good housekeeping’ which could lead to economies of 10 per cent or more. In conclusion the paper discusses investment in energy economy projects, outlining the support schemes which are available in the United Kingdom.
