The importance of initial planning and design of buildings and equipment is discussed in relation to hygiene on the dairy farm. Aspects of herd management required to produce milk of a satisfactory hygienic standard are described in connection with the housing of the cow, preparation of the cow for milking and cleaning of the milking equipment
