Over the last 10 years trends have been towards fewer farmers and fewer workers. Farms and farm businesses have increased in size as have individual enterprises within these businesses. Surplus production within the European Economic Community is the most important factor affecting future development and indications are that pressure for minimal Common Agricultural Policy price increases could result in a price/cost squeeze of general applicability. The industry is structurally well placed to meet a period of competition but in all sectors producers will have to be technologically up to date, economically aware and commercially alert if they are to succeed.
