The ability of people to work with machines is discussed by reference to the ‘man‐machine interface’ and the design of the workplace. Attention is drawn to the four major aspects of workplace design‐displays, controls, layout and environmental factors; the characteristics of good design are described. The different types of function that are more appropriately allocated to people and to machines are listed. The requirements of an individual are also considered by applying Maslow's Theory to a person at the workplace. The techniques available for increasing job satisfaction are outlined.
