The paper deals with research and development from a scientific and technological angle in its relation to the Milk Marketing Board. The main operations and farm services are described and the essential need for a sound R & D scheme in order to maintain these services is emphasized. The work of the Technical Division in the laboratory services and development departments involving microbiologists, chemists and food technologists is described and stresses the importance of the maintenance of first class quality in all dairy product and process development.
