This paper discusses briefly the reasons for the recent apparent increase in the problems of sediment, the legal situation and methods used to determine sediment in milk. The particulate size of sediment is shown diagrammatically in comparison with more common measurements and its composition discussed. Work on the assessment of filters and the development of British Standards 4938 and 5190 is considered and the use of different methods of analysis in determining the origin of sediment is shown. The points in the chain of milk production at which filtration can be or is being used are listed, and the advantages of multi‐service filters for farm use are discussed.
