The current breed composition of the national dairy herd and the changes that have taken place in recent years are discussed. Changes in breed average yields and butterfat percentage over the last 10 years are presented and an effort made to foresee future breed changes by the percentage of each breed that was currently bred pure. An attempt is made to compare the profitability of the various breeds. Breed improvement schemes are described and the possibility of future breed substitution discussed particularly in relation to the position of Holsteins.
