The paper shows how large dairy farm units are increasing in number. The costs and income of a typical advanced 200‐cow unit are given, and the return on capital is shown to be only 7 per cent. Inflation and the decreased level of Government grant are putting great pressures on costs. Better returns are needed to encourage capital expenditure on new and more economic systems.
