As part of this special section dedicated to the Argentine writer Tomás Eloy Martínez (1934–2010), this article explores his journalism in the 1960s in the newsweekly magazine Primera Plana . The most influential magazine of the decade, Primera Plana formed Argentine political opinion and cultural tastes. Martínez was the premier cultural journalist of the magazine, developing a distinctive style of ‘new journalism’. The article analyses his key role in developing film and literary criticism in Argentina and Latin America, as well as his coverage of a range of contemporary issues, from the anniversary of Hiroshima to the Russian space race.
