The aim of this paper is to explore the major factors influencing the selection of holidays from travel brochures, and the effect different brochure designs have on the perception of holidays by potential tourists. The influence of (a) coloured photographs, (b) black and white photographs and (c) the balance of written and photographic material in holiday brochures was investigated using interviews and the repertory grid technique. Three sets of seven sample holiday brochure designs were prepared which varied along these three dimensions. Results indicated that there were differences in the way these sample holidays were construed.
