This paper is a revised version of the author's contribution to an international seminar on ‘Training of Consumer Advisers’ (a joint seminar of the Danish Ministry of Education, the International Organization Consumers' Union and the Council of Europe, held in Aarhus, Denmark during February 1984). It is suggested that, in order to be effective, consumer advisers need a somewhat different and more comprehensive training than the one usually offered. Thus, in addition to established areas of theoretical and practical competence, prospective consumer advisers need a much broader understanding of the socio‐economic and psychological conditions governing modern life. The present paper points to some problem areas that are often neglected in existing curricula.
