The research on which this paper is based was aimed at examining the knowledge base for home economics practitioners. Here Jurgen Habermas’ theory relating to knowledge and systems of action is reviewed briefly and the rationale for using his theory to try to understand the family is outlined. A description of how the theory was used in a research project follows and, finally, some implications for home economics in Australia are identified.
