Two experiments, repeated patterns of results in which heart rate (HR) and rate of instrumental activity were negatively related. In the first experiment, HR covaried substantially with gross movement, both measures responding similarly in experimental and deprivation conditions though not to time (habituation). Different categories of behavior were associated with different levels of HR. In the second experiment, the rate of instrumental consummatory behavior was inversely related to other, high‐HR behaviors, and the cardiac and somatic measures were again independent in their response to time.
