Apparatus for respirating the curarized rat is described. Important variables in obtaining a stable curarized rat preparation are the volume and pressure of air with which the animal is respirated. Heart rate is a convenient indicator of the adequacy of respiration and a bleed valve added to the respirator allows fine volume adjustments which result in a stable, moderate level HR of 350‐420 bpm and a variability of 20‐40 bpm. It is also important to keep the animal at a steady depth of curarization, and maintain adequate body temperature.
