A method is presented for recording breathing rate in the unrestrained rat. A thermocouple is implanted in the nose and the leads are externalized through a terminal implanted on the skull. The difference in temperature between inspired and expired air is taken as the measure of breathing. Techniques for construction and implantation of the thermocouple unit are presented.
