Hemihydranencephaly with Favourable Outcome

SUMMARY The authors report a girl with left‐sided hemiparesis and unilateral hydranencephaly of the opposite side. Her psychomotor development has been far better than expected—she is only mildly delayed. Hemihydranencephaly is a rare anomaly: only five other cases are reported in the literature, three of whom were also mildly delayed. The fourth patient had multiple congenital defects combined with the hemihydranencephaly and was severely retarded, and no data on the fifth patient were provided. It may be that the prognosis for hemihydranencephaly is better than for most other destructive encephalopathies, which generally carry a poor prognosis for psychomotor development. RÉSUMÉ Hémihydranencéphalie avec un devenir positif Les auteurs rapportent le cas d'une fille présentant une hémiparésie gauche et une hydranencéphalie contralatérale. Son développement psycho‐moteur fut bien meilleur qu'il n'était attendu, elle est seulement modérément en retard. L'hémihydranencéphalie est une anomalie très rare: seulement cinq cas sont rapportés dans la littérature dont trois également avec un retard modéré. Le quatrième cas présentait de multiples défauts génétiques associés à l'hémihydranencéphalie et présentait un retard très important; aucune donnée n'est connue concernant le cinquième cas. Il est possible que le pronostic de l'hémihydranencéphalie soit meilleur que celui de la plupart des autres encéphalopathies destructrices qui ont généralement un mauvais pronostic concernant de développement psychomoteur. Hemihydranenzephalie ist eine sehr seltene Anomalie: es gibt nur fünf weitere Fälle in der Literatur, drei davon waren ebenfalls leicht retardiert. Der vierte Patient hatte multiple kongenitale Defekte in Verbindung mit der Hydranenzephalie und war schwer retardiert, über den fünften Patienten gab es keine näheren Daten. Es ist möglich, daß die Prognose bei einer Hydranenzephalie besser ist als für die meisten anderen destruktiven Enzephalopathien, die in der Regel eine schlechte Prognose für die psychomotorische Entwicklung haben. Su desarrollo psicomotor había sido mucho mejor de lo esperado, pues sólo tenía un ligero retraso. La hemihidranencefalia es una anomalia muy rara; sólo hay otros cinco casos en la literatura; de los cuatro tres tenían también sólo un ligero retraso. El cuarto paciente tenía defectos múltiples en combinación con la hemihidranencefalia y tenia un grave retraso. No hay datos sobre el quinto caso. Es posible que el pronóstico de la hemihidranencefalia sea major que el de otras encefalopatias destructivas, que por lo general tienen un mal pronóstico para el desarrollo psicomotor.
