HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE AND INTELLECTUAL PERFORMANCE OF PATIENTS WITH DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

SUMMARY The head circumferences of 64 patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy were measured and found to be greater than those of a normal population. The patients had relative, and in 12 cases, absolute macrocephaly. 47 of the 64 patients underwent intelligence testing and were found to be significantly intellectually impaired, particularly in verbal and language skills. There was no correlation between head circumference or absolute macrocephaly and intellectual performance. The cause of macrocephaly in these patients is unknown and its relevance to the aetiology of intellectual impairment in Duchenne muscular dystrophy is not yet clear. RÉSUMÉ Tour de tête et performances intellectuelles chez les myopathies de Duchenne Le tour de tête de 64 myopathies de Duchenne a été mesuré et trouvé plus grand que ceux de la population normale. Les patients avaient une macrocéphalie relative, et même absolue dans 12 cas. Des tests d'intelligence furent pratiqués chez 47 des 64 myopathes et montrèrent une atteinte intellectuelle manifeste, particulièrement sur le plan verbal et de langage. II n'y avait pas de corrélation entre le tour de tête ou la macrocéphalie absolue et les performances intellectuelles. La cause de macrocéphalie chez ces patients est inconnue et sa relation avec le déficit intellectuel de la myopathic de Duchenne n'est pas claire. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Kopfumfang und intellektuelle Fähigkeiten bei Patienten mit Duchenne'scher Muskeldystrophie Bei 64 Patienten mit Duchenne'scher Muskeldystrophie wurde der Kopfumfang gemessen und es wurde festgestellt daß es größer ist als bei der Normalpopulation. Die Patienten hatten eine relative und 12 Fällen eine absolute Makrozephalie. 47 der 64 Patienten machten einen Intelligenztest und zeigten signifikante intellektuelle Störungen, insbesondere in verbalen und sprachlichen Bereichen. Es fand sich keine Korrelation zwischen Kopfumfang oder absoluter Mikrozephalie und intellektuellen Fähigkeiten. Der Grund für die Makrozephalie bei unseren Patienten ist unbekannt und seine Relevanz für die Ätiologie der intellektuellen Störungen bei der Duchenne'schen Muskeldystrophie ist noch unklar. RESUMEN Perímetro craneano y nivel intelectual en pacientes con distrofia muscular de Duchenne Se midió el perímetro craneano de 64 pacientes con distrofia muscular de Duchenne hallándose que era mayor que el de la población normal. Los pacientes tenían una macrocefalia, que era absoluta en 12 casos. A 47 de los 64 pacientes se les pasó un test de inteligencia que dió una manifiesta deficiencia significativa, en especial en las habilidades verbales y del lenguaje. No había correlación entre el perímetro craneano o una microcefalia absoluta y el nivel intelectual. La causa de la macrocefalia en estos pacientes es desconocida y no queda clara su relevancia con respecto a la etiología de la alteración de la inteligencia en la distrofia muscular de Duchenne.
