The Operculum Syndrome: an Unusual Complication of Tuberculous Meningitis

SUMMARY The operculum syndrome, not previously documented as a complication of tuberculous meningitis, is described in a three‐year‐old African boy. The appearance on CT scan correlates radiographically with anatomical descriptions of the operculum syndrome, and is useful in distinguishing the condition from pseudobulbar palsy. RÉSUMÉ Le syndrome operculaire: complication inhabituelle de la méningite tuberculeuse Le syndrome operculaire, non antérieurement décrit comme complication de la méningite tuberculeuse, est décrit chez un jeune africain de trois ans. Les aspects au scanner correspondent avec les descriptions anatomiques du syndrome operculaire et sont trés utiles pour permettre une distinction avec un déficit de type pseudo‐bulbaire. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Das Operculum Syndrom: eine ungewöhnliche Komplikation bei der tuberkulösen Meningitis Das Operculum Syndrom, eine bisher nicht dokumentierte Komplikation der tuberkulösen Meningitis, wird bei einem drei‐jährigen afrikanischen Jungen beschrieben. Der Befund im CT korreliert radiographisch mit den anatomischen Beschreibungen des Operculum Syndroms und trägt dazu bei, dieses von der Pseudobulbärparalyse zu unterscheiden. RESUMEN El síndrome opercular: una complicación rara de la meningitis tuberculosa Se describe en un varón africano de tres aflos de edad un sindrome opercular, como una complicacion hasta ahora no citada de la meningitis tuberculosa. Las imágenes de la TAC se correlacionan con las descripciones anatómicas del sindrome opercular y es útil para distinguir esta patologïa de la parälisis pseudobulbar.
