Infantile Spasms and the CHARGE Association

SUMMARY A case is reported who had developmental delay, infantile spasms and the salient features of the CHARGE association‐colobomatous micropthalmia, congenital heart‐disease, mental retardation and hearing loss. This syndrome represents a distinct and clinically recognisable entity, and should be considered in patients with infantile spasms and ocular malformations. RÉSUMÉ Spasmes infantiles et syndrome de CHARGE L'article rapporte le cas d'une fillette au développement retardé présentant les caractéristiques les plus saillantes du syndrome de CHARGE‐microphtalmie colobomateuse, malformation cardiaque congénitale, retard mental, perte auditive et spasmes infantiles. Ce syndrome qui traduit une entité séparée et cliniquement reconnaissable doit etre envisagé chez les enfants avec spasmes infantiles et malformations oculaires. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG BNS Krämpfe und ‘CHARGE’ Syndrom Der Fallbericht eines in der Entwicklung retardierten Mädchens mit den eindeutigen Merkmalen des ‘CHARGE’ Syndroms‐kolobomatöse Mikrophthalmie, angeborener Herzfehler, geistige Retardierung, Gehörverlust und BNS Krämpfe‐wird hier dargestellt. Dieses Syndrom, das eine abgegrenzte und klinisch erkennbare Einheit darstellt, ist eine Erkrankung, an die bei Kindern mit BNS Krämpfen und Augenmißbildungen gedacht werden sollte. RESUMEN Espasmos infantiles y asociacion ‘CHARGE’ Se presenta el caso de una niña con retraso en el desarrollo y caracteristicas sobresalientes de la asociación CHARGE: microftalmia colobómica, cardiopatia congénita, retraso mental, sordera y espasmos infantiles. Este sindrome que representa una entidad separada y clinicamente reconocible, es una alteración que hay que tener presente en niños con espasmos infantiles y malformaciones oculares.
