SUMMARY Joey Deacon is a quadriplegic spastic patient resident in an institution for the mentally handicapped. He has no speech but has written his own biography. After fifty years residence a strategy was devised by which his intelligence could be assessed; it showed that he had a normal level of intelligence. The assessment strategy is described and some of the implications are discussed. RÉSUMÉ Joey Deacon est un spastique quadriplégique placé dans une institution pour retardés mentaux. II n'a pas de langage mais a écrit sa propre autobiographie. Après 50 ans de placement, il a étéétabli une stratégie permettant de mesurer son intelligence; le niveau de l'intelligence se révéla normal. Cette stratégie est décrite et quelques conséquences sont discutées. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Joey Deacon lebt in einer Institution für geistig behinderte Menschen und hat eine spastische Quadriplegie. Er kann nicht sprechen, aber er hat seine eigene Autobiographie geschrieben. Nachdem er fünfzig Jahre in dieser Institution gelebt hatte, fand man eine Methode, seine Intelligenz zu bestimmen. Es zeigte sich, daß er normal intelligent war. Es wird der Beurteilungsmodus beschrieben und einige Schlußfolgerungen werden diskutiert. RESUMEN Joey Deacon es un espastico cuadriplégico residente de una institucion para minusválidos mentales. Carece de lenguaje oral pero ha escrito su autobiografia. Después de cincuenta años de residencia se estableció una estrategia para que se pudiera evaluar su inteligencia: se observó que poseia un nivel normal de inteligencia. Se describe la estrategia seguida y se discuten algunas de sus implicaciones.
