Amniotic Fluid and Maternal Serum Alpha‐fetoprotein Determination in Neural Tube Defects

SUMMARY This paper reports the experience in Belfast, Northern Ireland, of alpha‐fetoprotein determinations in amniotic fluid and in maternal serum. While questions remain to be answered before alpha‐fetoprotein estimation becomes a standard antenatal screening procedure, the author concludes that prospective pilot studies should be undertaken in areas where there is a high incidence of neural tube defects. RÉSUMÉ L'article rapporte l'expérience à Belfast, Irlande du Nord, du dosage des alphafetoprotéines dans le liquide amniotique et le serum maternel. Tandis que certaines questions exigent toujours une réponse avant que le dosage des alphafetoprotéines puisse devenir un examen systématique standard ante‐natal, l'auteur conclut que des etudes pilotes prospectives devraient être entreprises dans les régions où la frequence des malformations du tube neural est grande. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Diese Arbeit berichtet über Erfahrungen mit Bestimmungen von Alpha‐fetoprotein in der Amnionflüssigkeit und im mütterlichen Serum in Belfast, Nordirland. Da einige Fragen noch unbeantwortet bleiben, ehe die Alphafetoproteinbestimmung ein standardisierter antenataler Suchtest wird, spricht sich der Autor dafür aus, daß prospektive Untersuchungen unternommen werden sollten in den Gegenden, wo es eine hohe Inzidenz von Defekten des Neuralrohres gibt. RESUMEN Esta comunicación aporta la experiencia en Belfast, Irlanda del Norte, de determinaciones de alfa‐fetoproteína en líquido amniótico y en suero materno. Mientras que permanecen preguntas para ser contestadas antes de que la estimación de alfa‐fetoproteína se convierta en un screening standard antenatal, el autor concluye que deben realizarse estudios pilotos prospectivos en las àreas donde hay una alta incidencia de defectos en el tubo neural.
