SUMMARY A survey of 85 children with congenital malformations of the lower back involving the medullary conus (but excluding spina bifida cystica) is presented. The signs, symptoms and investigations are described, together with an account of the embryology. A rationale for operative treatment is offered with a description of the operative findings. RESUMEN Se comunica un estudio de 85 niños con malformaciones congénitas del dorso inferior con implicación del cono medular (pero con excepción de la espina bífida quística). Se describen los signos, síntomas, y exploraciones, además de la embriología. Se ofrece una exposición de la técnica operativa, con una descripción de los hallazgos operativos.
