SUMMARY A new syndrome—persistent bacteraemia—occurring in cases of hydrocephalus treated by the insertion of Spitz‐Holter valves is described. It is due to the colonisation of the valve by organisms and is characterised by persistent pyrexia, progressive anaemia, splenomegaly and repeatedly positive blood‐cultures. Coagulase‐negative staphylococci were the cause in 3 of the 5 cases.
