summary Tree pollen data in the form of mean frequencies for the late Flandrian were collected from 46 sites in the Northern Pennines. They indicate that as in the early and mid‐Flandrian spatial variation in the species composition of the woodlands is related to local geology, topography and climate. A sub‐set of the data was compared with published mid‐ and early Flandrian data from the same sites. Temporal variation in Betula, Pinus and Alnus is related to changes in climate, in Ulmus and Corylus to Dutch elm disease and in Fraxinus to human disturbance. Spatial diversity is at least as strong as temporal.
