SUMMARY Two decades have passed since the C4 cycle was first described. In this time, an increasingly large body of information has shown that the complexities of structure and metabolism associated with C4 photosynthesis may be successfully exploited to understand further the molecular biology, biochemistry and structure‐function relationships of photosynthetic cells.
