S ummary Tissue isolates were collected from 25 basidiocarps of Suillus luteus (L. ex Fr.) S. F. Gray under pine trees ( Pinus sylvestris L.) at nine sites in a small forest area (approximately 1 km 2 ) and tested for somatic incompatibility. Eleven distinct clones were detected, none of which was found in more than one site. This ectomycorrhizal fungus therefore possesses a population structure similar to that of many wood‐decomposing basidiomycetes.
