S ummaryLupinus bicolor Lindl. and Lotus purshianus (Benth.) Clem. & Clem, plants growing on copper mine waste in northern California exhibited considerably greater copper tolerance at 0.2 mg copper 1 −1 in nutrient solution than plants from an adjacent meadow. Effective nitrogen fixation in the copper‐enriched soils is suggested from acetylene reduction assays.
