S ummary Soluble carbohydrate content, glucose 6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity and amount, and DNA and RNA content were measured in the tissues of fruit bodies of Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Imbach. developing at different stages of the periodic fruiting cycle. Trehalose content, G6PD activity and G6PD protein were maximal at flush emergence independent of the stage of development of the sporophore. Mannitol accumulated in growing sporophores both during and between the flushes of fruit body production. The RNA content of the gill tissue consistently increased in fruit bodies developing during the flush but sporophores growing between flushes showed a decline in RNA content after early gill development. Gill DNA content doubled just prior to sporulation in sporophores growing during the flush but not in those developing between flushes. The mycelial control of the biochemical development of the fruit body is discussed.
