S ummary Twenty‐one clones of Galium boreale L. have been provisionally identified in a grassland area 55 × 30 m on Widdybank Fell, Teesdale, Co. Durham, by comparison of plant samples collected in 25 cm quadrats and grown under cultivation. The species composition of each quadrat was also listed. Quadrat data were analysed by association analysis and a comparison of clonal distribution and major vegetational types made. The results are discussed in relation to the rate of recruitment of individuals and the ecology of G. boreale .
