SUMMARY The mediation by phytochrome of the amount of gibberellin (GA)‐like substances extractable from etioplasts is well documented. Results presented here show that phytochrome mediates the amount of GA‐like substances extractable from Hordeum vulgare L. chloroplasts, and changes in the chlorophyll a/b ratio of chloroplasts. The results are discussed in relation to shade detection and the efficiency of photosynthesis in the natural environment.
